UNITED MUSICIANS FRONT PICKETS LA MEGA;
DEMANDS FAIR TREATMENT
(NEW YORK, 25 March 2001): A mass demonstration by the United Musicians Front (UMF) will be held outside the offices of LA MEGA (WSKQ FM, 97.9), 26 West 56th Street in Manhattan (between 5th and 6th Avenues), Wednesday and Thursday, the 28th and 29th of March 2001 from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m.
The UMF is a newly formed organization calling for the unity of all musicians and bandleaders working in Latin music and every Latin music fan concerned with the state of Latin music on "commercial" radio today. Their bottom line is the conservation of an exploited culture and the preservation of that culture through its music.
According to the UMF, "LA MEGA's refusal to play the recordings, old and new, of New York-based Latin artists is an affront to the Latino community. The rumors of payola surrounding LA MEGA are so rampant that everyone is seriously questioning the station's entire operation." In addition, the UMF has made the following demands:
1) That LA MEGA enter into an alliance with members of the UMF for the
purpose of programming New York-based Latin music either on a regular rotational basis or in mutually agreed upon time slots.
2) That LA MEGA cease the verbal abuse of Latina women emanating from its
morning drive time show, "Vacilon de la Maņana."
3) That LA MEGA institute a historical and cultural music show that educates, informs, enlightens and entertains the people of our beautifully diverse city.
