Mbra Party with Pure Salsa at the Exchange Club on 1/15/00.

The photographs on this page were taken on January 15, 2000, at the Exchange Club. The location of the Parlour Cafe Party Mbra was moved to the exchange Club at the last minute. DJ Elvira (a.k.a. Fulanita), the "Off-The-Hook" "On-2" DJ, played continuous salsa and kept the few die-hard Mambo maniacs that braved the harsh Winter weather in search of the perfect dance. The Exchange Club is located at 6 Hanover Street (on Hanover Square) in Lower Manhattan (NYC). These photographs were taken by J. Fernando Lamadrid. Your feed back is welcome. The night of the mBra party the city was under the effects of the first cold weather of the Winter. It was unbelievably cold and there was a wind blowing. The taxi driver was not able to find the exact address and as we circled the neighborhood I saw many lost salseros in various states of pre-hypothermia looking for the club on foot.

I arrived at the club around 11:30 PM. The club was in the old Foreign Currency Exchange near Wall Street in New York's financial district. The Exchange, an old bank with marble floors and an art deco style, was turned into a club a couple of years ago after being empty for many years. Most of the fixtures were maintained and many plush couches were added on both sides of the expansive room where the bank's offices once were. There were about one-hundred people inside, including Jose Alberto "El Canario", the well known Dominican Salsero. After the party I heard various groups of people commenting that the level of dancing as the best they had had in a long time.
