The Guiro

This rhythmic instrument is made from a large dried gourd. Several lines are carved on the front side while a large hole is made in the back which allows the musician to grasp the instrument with his left thumb. The sound is made by scrapping the front with a metal or hardwood stick. One can create distinct sounds depending upon whether the guiro is played with a wooden or metal stick. The metal produces a deeper vibration while the wooden stick creates a smoother sound. The Guiro, like other instruments used in cuban rhythms, is played along with the strikes of the clave. It is considered a true art to be able to play this instrument in the exact moments that the music requires. This instrument is not used in Boleros.
