Description of Maria's Class (dated August 1999)
Maria's classes are paced to get anybody dancing.
They are challenging enough for beginners and intermediates from other
dance schools and instructors. Maria gives out a sheet with over
one-hundred shines and the foot and count for the in and out of
the shine for both men and women. The date on the original is from
the early 1970's. She goes over two or three shines in rigorous detail.
Her explanations are clear and concise. She is nurturing, and attentive to
all her students in a motherly sort of way. She is a born teacher or has
developed her teaching method to the point that she can give attention to
all with out favoring any. She rotates the class that is spread out in
long rows of dance students. There is one short break about an hour into the class.
Then Maria does partner work. She shows one or two turn combinations.
Maria makes everybody feel welcome and at ease with her mixture of "mama' latina"
and New York street smarts.
