The photographs on this page were taken at the Mambo Showdown at Starlite Caterers. I left for the Bronx from the JustSalsa.com offices around 11:00 PM. I had gone there to download the directions to the club off the Internet. I "cut-and-pasted" the information that I needed into a word processor and printed it out. Armed with "left-right" directions to the club I jumped into a cab for the $30 cab ride up to the Bronx. The ride is beautiful at night. We took the West side highway. The George Washington bridge was illuminated with a string of lights along its span and cables and could be seen far up the Hudson river. On one side of the highway is the river on the other is Riverside Park. The ride through the Bronx at night with a cab driver that spoke little English was no problem. I had gotten from the Internet not only clear directions to the club but also the telephone number of the club (and the promoter as well), phone numbers of car services in the area, and I knew what shoes to wear for the speed of the floor (listed for all "On-2" events in NYC on various sites).

In the club the buzz was happening in various corners of the room. The special guests, the Italians, in town for the "Showdown" were in the back near the DJ booth. The regulars were in their corner which had also turned into a dressing/staging area for the performers. Some pretty amazing dancing was happening on the floor. The Mambo-nicks were all dressed in their Mambo-best and many good dancers were watching the action on the floor.

Performances were given by Evelyn Ramos, Omar Dance Studio, Fuerza Latina, Addie-tude Dancers, Young Ambition, Daniela and Graziano (from Viela Italy), Descarga Latina, and Salsa Rica Dancers (from Milan Italy).

At the end of the night when the Mambo had subsided, and the garish lights intended to clear out the last of the stragglers in the club were turned on, I left with a group of friends. The night was cold and it was snowing. It had been snowing for some time as was evident by the blanket of fresh white stillness that covered every thing.
